    In a culture that tends to line up for movies starring muscle bound men named Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, FRIED GREEN TOMATOES has turned out to he the little movie that could. The movie grossed $25.4 million by its second month of release, not had for a film that cost $11 million to produce (Fox). Critics have praised FRIED GREEN TOMATOES' sepia colored depiction of life in the rural south, and surprisingly in a town that favors babes, bangs and blood, the film copped an award from the Writer's Guild for best screenplay based on material from another medium (Weinraub C21).

    Based on Fanny Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, the film is a story within a story of Southern female friendship and love. The movie opens when Evelyn Couch, an unhappy housewife, meets tip with Ninny Threadgoode, a resident of a nursing home. Ninny begins telling the story of Idgie and Ruth, two Depression-era women who love each other, raise a child together, befriend African Americans and run the Whistle Stop Cafe. Not your typical blockbuster.

    But the film managed to attract mainstream audiences despite the absence of testosterone-driven action. The National Review's movie critic called FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

    'a modest American film that can be enjoyed by adults and children, natives and foreigners, feminists and male chauvinists, Southerners and even Yankees who never so much as saw let alone ate, less than a rubicund tomato' (45).

    Ironically, for someone who sees the world in terms of black and white, the reviewer left out two fairly conspicuous pairs — African Americans and whites, and straights and gays. Maybe that's because rather than dealing with race and relationships honestly, the film attempts to appeal to whites' attitudes about blacks and to straight peoples' attitudes about same sex partnerships.

    As for the racial issue, Flagg said when she adapted the book for film, she intended to show a

    'different side of the South, because most literature and film about the South are either about poor white trash or faded Southern aristocracy' (Keough E3).

    Obviously, she was only interested in correcting the negative stereotypes of whites, for the film carries out Hollywood's tradition of depicting blacks as good Negroes, loyal, devoted and harmless (Roffman and Simpson 15).

    Correcting the erroneous stereotypes of Southerners wasn't Flagg's only intention though; she also planned to show the affection that existed between blacks and whites. 'People don't realize how much love there was — and still is between the races,' she added, remembering her grandmother's stories about how blacks and whites pulled together during the Depression (Clendenin 14). But the film fails at this attempt as well. The Black perspective of these friendships is missing, although not surprisingly so. As William Alexander Percy, a Mississippi planter, wrote in his 1941 autobiography, Lanterns on the Levee,

    'It is true in the South that whites and blacks live side by side, exchange affection liberally, and believe they have an innate and miraculous understanding of one another. But the sober fact is we understand one another not at all' (Goldfield 4).

    What Percy is describing is the result of racial etiquette that produced a

    'stage Negro [which] inured whites to the suffering of Southern Blacks' (4).

    Although whites were able to express their familiarity with Blacks, Blacks were required to refer to Whites as 'sir' or 'maam,' positioning themselves in a humble manner that

    'would make a white comfortable in believing that this deferential mien was not only right, but the way things ought to be' (3).

    FRIED GREEN TOMATOES recreates this comfort zone. Blacks are deferential to whites, but we never find out the reasons why. The two main African American characters, Big George and Sipsey, are clearly devoted to Idgie, their boss — Big George to doglike proportions. As Ninny says, 'He watched over [Idgie] night and day.' At first it seems as though he is mute; in several scenes, he stands passively waiting for Idgie. It's not until she's grown and running the Cafe that he finally speaks. When Idgie is challenged by a Klan member for serving Blacks outside her restaurant, Big George utters his first words, 'You gonna get yourself in a whole heap of trouble.' We never learn how this threat affects him; we never learn how he feels about barbecuing all those ribs his friends and family can't even go inside to eat; his only concern is what will happen to Idgie.

    Sipsey's response to this same incident is to smile and say, 'Grady won't sit next to a colored child, but he eats eggs that shoot out of a chicken's ass.' As with Big George, we never know how Sipsey feels about frying all those eggs for someone she knows is racist. The film would have us believe she thinks it's funny.

    Later, when the Klan captures Big George and beats him brutally with a whip, he gets his second line in the movie. Idgie runs to his aid and Big George mumbles, 'Don't, Miss Idgie. You gon get yourself in a whole heap of trouble.' One gets the feeling that either Big George suffers from echolalia, or he exists, as Ninny said, purely to watch over Idgie.

    Sipsey does her share of watching over this family too; in fact, she is the true heroine of this film. She risks her life to save Ruth's baby from the evil ex-husband, Frank Bennett, when he comes to kidnap the child. Then, in spite of being injured, she manages to kill him. But for all her heroism, the next time we see her in the restaurant, she is shuffling across the floor in loose shoes, a grin on her face, obviously happy to be at the service of these white folks.

    NTFS, HFS+, FAT — These are the primary formats that are in use today by PC users. One is for Windows, one is for Mac, and one crosses the two (but with its own limitations).

    Windows — With the advent of Windows NT, Microsoft moved their optimized drive format to something called NTFS (New Technology File System). This is the format that is used with all current versions of Windows. If you have a Windows PC (NT on, including Windows 7), then your system drive is most likely formatted in the NTFS format.

    Mac — Since Mac OS 8.1, the Mac has been using a format called HFS+ — also known as Mac OS Extended format. This format was optimized to minimize the amount of drive storage space used for a single file (the previous version used sectors loosely, leading to rapidly lost drive space). This is the required format for a bootable Mac hard drive. For a hard drive to be used with Time Machine (Mac OS X 10.5 and later), the drive must be formatted in HFS+ Journaled (Journaled adds an extra element to the standard HFS+ format).

    Interoperability — Now for the confusing part: what drive formats work with what OSs. While Windows can read and write to NTFS formatted drives, it can neither write nor read to a drive that has been formatted HFS+. (I should note here that there are several third party software drivers on the market that will allow either OS to read and write the other’s formats — but not all functionality is supported, and they both reduce performance when going through such an application)

    The Mac, on the other hand, can read an NTFS formatted drive — it just can’t write to it (again, unless you use a third party software driver).

    There is yet a third drive format that CAN be used across these two operating systems without the need for special third party drivers. It is called FAT.     Most forms of removable media (memory cards for digital cameras, flash drives, etc) use the FAT format, as the capacity of most of these devices is significantly smaller than hard drives, and the more robust formats of the two predominant operating systems is not required.

    The one simple benefit of the FAT format today is that it can be read from and written to by either of the operating systems discussed here. So on a Windows PC, you can read and write to a FAT formatted drive. And you can do the same on a Mac. This format gives you the ability to very easily move a drive between the two compute platforms.

    There’s one significant limitation to this though — a FAT32 formatted drive cannot take a file larger than 4GB. The error message that gets reported if you try to copy a file larger than 4GB onto the drive is misleading — it says that there is not enough room for the file. That would lead you to believe that the drive is full. The drive can be completely empty and still not have room for the file — it simply cannot handle a file of that size.

    All is well apart from a little problem in the device manager which may not affect performance at all, still it is best to get the device manager sorted without any errors.
    I've included a screenshot for the PCI to PCI bridge yellow exclamation error - I've tried the chipset and MEI - What is this little problem? -

    There is a simple solution to the mentioned SS video problem:
    - startup with extension off;
    - after OS9 has finished starting up, select your preferred video resolution using the Monitor control panel;
    - reboot.
    From now on, SS will boot the emulated Mac without video problems.

    I am just curious how fast this emulation is on dual core Intel Macs--- I imagine it could be wicked fast, running old PPC apps faster than G4s ever did. Yes? No? Maybe?

    No, unfortunately. Unlike the transition from 68k to PowerPC, the new architecture is not Wicked Fast™. Most of the performance increases seen in the new machines have little to do with the main processor, but rather with the FSB, DDR2 RAM, PCI Express, SATA, &c.
    Perhaps when Conroe, Morem, &c. come out the difference will be more significant.

    Is there a way to use 9.2.2 with Sheepsaver? That's the only install disc I have (that came with my PowerMac).

    I'm curious what essential Classic apps folks are still running.

    Essential apps:
    Oxford English Dictionary (set up to run from a CD image instead of the original CD)
    Lexis-Nexis (much faster than the web interface)
    WordPerfect (sometimes)
    And most important and productivity-ruining of all -
    The old AfterDark Stained Glass module, using the MacDim AD launcher (see my hint about this somewhere else on the site).
    It's the last one that I'm really going to miss on an Intel Mac..

    Lots of custom software is needed to configure or operate older hardware. The devices may still be in use but the control computer has failed. In my case, I don't want to carry around an old laptop to occasionally configure an older device.
    Does anyone know if a classic app running in these emulators can use a USB-serial adaptor?

    Indeed. I'm still occasionally playing Fool's Errand and the original Myst. Except for that, I can't remember the last time I used Classic to actually accomplish anything.

    There are Mac OS X versions of a few of those games I think - Maelstrom certainly, and Apeiron too I think.

    Yeah, games are about all I ever run in Classic, too!

    I still run Civilization 2 (sue me, that's the version I like!), and I just get a hankerin' to run Future Cop sometimes, which was a kick-butt game that never got the marketing it deserved. It even came out for the Mac before the PC (in 1998!).

    Neither of these games, AFAIK, will ever be updated to OS X. As long as I can play these games, I will, 'cause they're great games, so why all the hate about those of us who still keep a copy of Classic around?

    Intel Games For Mac Windows 10

    quarkxpress 4.0 along with a ton of custom developed software for it. the expense and time to re-develop the code for use with the current version of quark would be out of proportion with the benefit gained. xpress 4.0 runs perfectly for what i use it for.
    i'll be following and researching how to run classic apps on the intel chips very closely before i can purchase any for the shop.

    Virtual TimeClock 2.5. I know that there are dozens of Time-recording applications available for OS X, but they all require entry of clients, projects, tasks, or other endless information for which I have no need. Virtual TimeClock does one thing, simply--it works like a regular punchclock, allowing me to clock-in/clock-out for the day and for breaks, and totals my time entries and overtime. There is a Pro version for OS X, but it costs $129--the one I have cost me $29 years ago. Until someone comes up with a replacement, I'll keep using this one.

    Those are some interesting replies. I'm just confused how someone can have the money to buy an intel machine, but no money to upgrade software. How about you upgrade that software first?
    I do understand about needing old software to control even older hardware. But again, how about some hardware upgrades?
    OS 9 has been dead for 4 years, lets all let it go.

    Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA)

    It is quite possible for software upgrades to total MORE than the cost of new hardware. Software can be VERY expensive. I got a font editor for less than a hundred bucks 20 years ago. Now it's several hundred, and doesn't even have all the features of the old software. I am planning to use vMac to run FONTastic Plus 2.0.2 and other System 6 software which to this day still have no OS X equivalent. Apple's killing of OS 9 does not magically make new and affordable software appear. Hey, I wish it did.

    Over the last 20 years I have written literally hundreds of HyperCard apps that are indispensable to my research. Most of them use specialized externals that will not work with the various HC replacements that have come out since Apple dropped HC. I also need to use a genetic mapping program called ACeDB. There is a OS X version but it would require that I redo much of my data AND modify the HC scripts I use to generate the data file in the first place.

    This is probably verboten, but how does one get a copy of 9.0.4? I have a CD of 9.2.2, but tossed any version of 9 before that ('Ha! Won't need THOSE anymore!'). It's frustrating since I have a valid license to use OS 9 (several, actually); I just want to use an older version.

    Lew, I could afford a new machine every year, the cost is trivial compared to the number of hours invested in writing software. It is a matter of the number of hours invested in writing software. I have spent 20 years programming hypercard stacks for various psychology research projects. The time involved learning new programming languages and compilers then redoing much of this work would take me about 5 - 6 years if I worked on it non stop. I have more important things to do with my time. It is sad, I have gone from teaching in a university department buying about 30 macs a year to surrendering to use microsh**t platform for all but my individual research simply because the lack of backwards compatability and steves hubris in junking hypercard. The Gee wizz look what new macs can do focus has completely stuffed many in education and research. We do not have the time resources to cope with new platforms and are faced with a choice of hours wasted rewriting software or abandoning macs for windows because of the central support that is offered.
